When Capt. Cook first discovered Great Barrier Island he named it so because the island acts as a barrier between the Pacific Ocean and the Hauraki Gulf of New Zealand.
The island is situated approx. 30 mins from Auckland by Air, or if you prefer, passenger and vehicle ferries travel twice weekly.
